Nitrogen is an element with the symbol N and atomic number 7 in the periodic table of the elements. In nature, the gas usually occurs as a diatomic molecule with the molecular formula N2, and relatively frequently: around 78 percent of the air we breathe consists of nitrogen, followed only in second place by oxygen with 21 percent and argon with around one percent. As a compound of three hydrogen atoms and one nitrogen atom, it forms ammonia (NH3). Elemental nitrogen is both colourless and odourless at room temperature. If the gas is cooled down to -195.82° C, liquid nitrogen is obtained, which is used as a refrigerant in the food or medical sector. Nitrogen gas is also inert, which is why it is used, for example, as a shielding gas for welding or in light bulbs. In addition, nitrogen is of course also used as a test gas, for example for leak testing or for finding leaks.
